Heinrich Hoffmann Photo Gallery

Heinrich Hoffmann (1885 – 1957) served as Adolf Hitler’s official photographer from when Hitler took control of the Nazi party in 1921 until his death in 1945. Hoffmann estimates he took over half a million photographs of Hitler over the course of his career. His portraits were the most significant source of Nazi propaganda materials published over the course of close to 25 years, everything from postcards, posters, magazines, postage stamps and picture books. Hitler in Lederhosen Set #3

This is another session of photographs taken early in the Spring of 1927. I’ve managed to track down 13 photos from this particular series, and it is possible there may be more. Heinrich Hoffmann often photographed Adolf Hitler in many various outfits during the late 1920’s to help him decide what would make himself most appealing to the German public, but Hitler eventually decided that this particular look was “beneath his dignity” and he had them all banned from further publication after 1933. Whether one finds these silly, sassy, stylish or sexy, thankfully these negatives were secretly preserved by Hoffmann and were never actually destroyed!

This photograph was posted by the Deutsches Historisches Museum in March 2023, but unfortunately it is not currently available in a higher resolution format.

I love history and have always been infatuated with the design and style of the 1920’s. Unfortunately I can’t time travel back to this era, so I live vicariously through books, movies and photos.

    I also love history, and used to watch many silent films so I could immerse myself in the 1910s and 1920s. It felt like time travel each time! Loving these photos of AH in lederhosen!

      I watch silent films all the time, my favorite era is the 1920’s, I just adore the fashion and the Art Deco architecture! My favorite film of all time is Metropolis. I’d give ANYTHING to time travel back to Germany in 1927 to see that film premiere and to see AH donning his lederhosen!! 🤗🤗🤗

        Really?! That’s fantastic! METROPOLIS is also one of my all-time favourites! I love German Expressionism in silent films, but also many others in which I can see the fashion, art and architecture. I used to write reviews for silent films on amazon.com and for some websites. I probably wrote about 100 reviews on amazon in the early 2000s. I still have dozens of DVDs, but don’t get to watch them much these days.

        I still have tons of movies on VHS too, pre-Amazon days 😅 One of my favorite actors is Gustav Fröhlich, I have most of his films on tape but I need to get these all digitized. Although I still really love the nostalgia of using my VCR 😊

        Sounds like you’re way ahead of me there. I think I’ve only seen Gustav Froehlich in one other film once. I assume you’re including his later talkie films, too. I also have quite a few VHS tapes; silent and early talkies, and we watch them occasionally. My husband is an expert on 30s and 40s movies. And I still have my 35-year-old stereo and record player! Nostalgia is important!

        Oh yes I have his 1930’s films as well. There is a really interesting connection to Hitler and Goebbels that I ran across, that goes with this amazing photograph:

        ”Adolf Hitler and Joseph Goebbels visit the studios of UFA in Babelsberg on 4 January 1935 and watch the filming of ‘Barcarole’ starring Gustav Fröhlich and Czech actress Lida Baarova. Fröhlich was banned from acting for two years after allegedly slapping Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels in a fit of jealous rage. The ever-roving-eyed Goebbels began making amorous overtures to Froehlich’s then-partner Baarova. She became involved in a scandalous love affair with Goebbels until 1938, when Hitler demanded he terminate the affair and forbid her from making any further films in Germany.”
