Heinrich Hoffmann (1885 – 1957) served as Adolf Hitler’s official photographer from when Hitler took control of the Nazi party in 1921 until his death in 1945. Hoffmann estimates he took over half a million photographs of Hitler over the course of his career. His portraits were the most significant source of Nazi propaganda materials published over the course of close to 25 years, everything from postcards, posters, magazines, postage stamps and picture books. The 4th Nazi Party Congress, known as the “Day of Composure”, was held in Nuremberg from August 1–4, 1929. The rally attracted 60,000 SA and SS men and included 2000 Hitler Youth. Baldur von Schirach directed the first feature length propaganda film ‘Der Nürnberger Parteitag der NSDAP’ to cover the events of this rally. Financial difficulties had forced the Nazi party to call off the annual congress in 1928. Two years had passed since the previous rally, and a much more robust and mature Nazi party was on display for all the world to see, along with an expanded lineup of entertainment. A larger and more elaborate Storm Trooper parade marched through the Main Market Square, which came along with all the usual brawling and street fights with communists. The evenings concluded with an impressive fireworks display, and the party even hosted a special celebrity guest, General Von Epp. Most notably, the very first ceremony at the new Ehrenhalle to honor the German dead from the Great War also occurred at this rally.
